Just over three months ago, I joined Venquis as a trainee in the Venquis Academy, as part of the Insurance Permanent team, specialising in placing developers into that market. Starting a new job as a recent graduate, you usually head into it with preconceptions, but recruitment is a bit of an odd one when it comes to that as it’s not on the list of mainstream jobs grads go into and, I believe, most people still don’t have a clear idea of what it is exactly. So, why recruitment? For many people, recruitment seems to be one of those sales jobs for those who don’t really know what they want to do, and they go into it until they have made up their minds about their ‘actual career’. Now I would be lying if I said that I knew exactly what I was getting myself into. I had a vague idea of what recruitment was, but it’s such a multi-faceted industry that, unless you’ve done it, you can't have a clear idea of what it entails, how it works and what will be expected of you. After finishing university and considering various options, recruitment just seemed like the ideal fit. I wanted to be autonomous, in charge of my own career, and I wanted to get into something entrepreneurial, but something that related to people. Recruitment was the only thing that ticked all the boxes for me. My first day - The Venquis Academy So, joining the Venquis Academy I had no idea of how I was going to be trained, and the first few days were kind of intimidating. There I was surrounded by all these people walking around on the phone, speaking about things I’ve never heard of, sounding so confident in everything they said. Every now and again someone would ring the bell signalling they’ve made a placement for a client, and all I could think of was ‘Will that ever be me?’. Luckily, the way the Academy is structured really allows trainees to be trained in the most efficient way through a blend of theory, observing the more experienced consultants around you, and most importantly, by sitting down and doing the job. There is no perfect formula for how to do recruitment. Talking to people every moment of every day will inevitably make every conversation and situation different, so a trial and error approach is the most effective way to learn. 13 weeks later - Onto the Insurance desk Thanks to the 13-stage programme, I’ve managed to go from clueless grad to knowing what I need to do to become a successful recruiter. And now, everything I’m hoping to get out of this career seems more achievable. One of the best things about Venquis is probably the fact that there are quite a few options to choose from when it comes to deciding where you want to head. Whether I decide I eventually want to start managing people as team lead, or I wanted to move to the client side of the business, it’s all possible. The one thing that’s for sure is that I can see myself staying here for years to come. Even though it’s still a competitive sales environment, there is plenty of support and everyone is extremely friendly and ready to help. More than any other job, recruitment allows you to take charge of your career and how much you’re getting out of it.
