It’s World Mental Health Day and this year the focus is on stress. According to a recent YouGov survey a staggering 93% of young adults surveyed had experienced feeling overwhelmed or unable to cope in the past year. The recruitment industry is full of young people and Venquis is certainly no exception. On top of that we are a high performance sales environment and that too comes with its stresses. Getting and staying ‘Fit for Work’ With this in mind, two years ago we introduced our Fit for Work scheme as we strongly believe that healthy bodies and minds create a productive and engaged sales floor. We want each and every one of our employees to be the best version of themselves and over the last year we have offered a variety of activities to help them achieve that. There’s something for everyone – whether you prefer a high energy workout at PT session or a more reflective yoga class to reset your mind and focus for the day. There’s free fruit always available in the office and we’ve bring in external speakers to give lunch-time talks on a wide range of topics including sleep, nutrition and tactics to handle stress. All our offices take part in annual company runs; some of us are faster than others but everyone makes it to the finishing line and having fun is what it’s all about. We also have a Sports Day each summer. It’s a great way to get everyone outside and reconnect away from the daily routine and everyone returns invigorated and up for the challenge of the job. Encouragingly we’ve noticed an increasing number of our clients also taking a much more open stance on the topic of mental health. Many of them now run regular workshops and forums available to all employees. Conversations in the workplace around mental health issues are also much easier to have these days, largely due to the excellent media coverage, improving our understanding of the topic and well respected celebrities being honest about their experiences. Fit for Work may be small steps in tackling a big issue and we don’t presume that we can take away a person’s anxieties (other than work-related ones) but if we’ve provided individuals with different outlets to combat the stresses they face then we may have played a small part in helping colleagues deal with their challenges, whilst at the same time creating a healthy work environment.
